Featured title Edinburgh: A history of the city. The late poet laureate, Sir John Betjeman, said that it was the most beautiful city in Europe, also that it contained the best street in Britain. He was talking about Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. Its stirring, eventful history stretches back over 1500 years. Today it is taking on a new lease of life as the seat of the Scottish Parliament restored in 1999 after three centuries of the Union with England. This one volume history covers the entire story from the earliest times to the present, balancing all the different elements in it, cultural, political or social, and shows how they have borne on one another.
