Michael Schmidt

No Text Michael Schmidt is a poet, a publisher, a critic, an academic, and a writer of fiction. Currently the University of Glasgow's first Professor of Poetry, he is also Convener of the M. Litt. in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow.

Michael Schmidt was born in Mexico in 1947 and studied at the universities of Harvard and Oxford. A founder and editorial director of Carcanet Press, he has also been editor of PN Review for thirty years. His titles include Lives of the Poets (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1998), a comprehensive overview of six centuries of British poetry, and more recently Volume 3 in The Story of Poetry: From Pope to Burns (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2007), The Great Modern Poets,(Quercus 2006) and a volume of poetry The Resurrection of the Body, (Doorstop/Smith 2007). He is currently working on Lives of the Novelists for Weidenfeld & Nicolson and Fifty Scenes from Shakespeare for Quercus.

He was awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to poetry and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
